Scores of residents are currently trapped after a two-storey building collapsed in the Isale Eko area of Lagos State.

The structure collapsed on Thursday following a fire in parts of Dosunmu Market on Lagos Island.

Multiple pictures of the scene obtained by SaharaReporters showed how the damaged building  collapsed with many of the residents and occupants were yet to be rescued.

The Lagos Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Ibrahim Farinloye, also confirmed the incident.

He said 14 other buildings were seriously impacted by the fire.

In April, SaharaReporters reported an outbreak of fire in the market which affected at least four buildings.

SaharaReporters had also reported how three bodies including the corpse of an 11-year-old girl were recovered from the rubble of a collapsed mosque in the Mushin area of Lagos State on Sunday.

The incident occurred in the Papa Ajao area of Mushin on Sunday afternoon during prayer time (Zuhr prayer).

Earlier in the day, the spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin on X, said only an 11-year-old girl had been found dead following the incident and that others who sustained varying degrees of injury had been taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Giving an update on Sunday evening, the Permanent Secretary of Lagos Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Dr Femi Osanyintolu in a statement said three bodies had been recovered from the rubble.

He said the affected buildings “had been levelled to ground zero”.
