The National President of the Almushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA), an Abuja-based non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting transparency, accountability, and combating corruption, Amb. Aminu Majidadi has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to immediately reverse the recent fuel price increase.
According to Majidadi the increment, if left unchecked, will exacerbate the already dire economic conditions faced by the average Nigerian.
He said,fuel price hikes have historically had a cascading effect on the nation’s economy, with immediate repercussions on the cost of transportation, goods, and services. The national president, noted that the common man, who is already grappling with inflation, unemployment, and stagnant wages, will bear the brunt of this decision.
The ambassador also warns that without swift intervention, the suffering of the populace will intensify, threatening social stability.
Stating that at a time when many Nigerians are struggling to make ends meet, the fuel price increase is an additional burden that will escalate the cost of living, further driving millions into poverty. Transportation costs will skyrocket, and the prices of essential commodities already on an upward trajectory will rise even higher. For small businesses and individuals who rely heavily on fuel for their operations, this decision could mean the difference between survival and collapse.
The NGO president emphasized that reversing the fuel price hike is crucial to mitigate the ongoing economic challenges. He pointed out that while efforts to reform the nation’s oil and gas sector are necessary, these must be done in a way that considers the welfare of the citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.
He also urged the government to explore alternative policies that prioritize long-term economic growth without placing undue pressure on the common man.
The current situation, the NGO president noted, could also lead to widespread dissatisfaction, protests, and unrest if not addressed immediately. As inflation continues to rise and the purchasing power of the naira declines, the government must act with urgency to ease the economic burden on its citizens. Ambassador recommends a more measured approach to fuel subsidy reforms, one that balances fiscal responsibility with social justice.
In conclusion, the National President of AITA highlighted the urgent need for the government to adopt a people-centered approach in its policy decisions. Transparency, accountability, and responsiveness to the needs of the masses should be at the core of any economic reforms. As he added that the NGO reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for policies that foster equity, justice, and sustainable development.
