Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has proposed that Nigeria adopt a model of leadership selection similar to that used in China, arguing that it could greatly benefit the country.
Speaking at the 24th National Conference of the Nigerian Institution of Agricultural Engineers in Abuja, Zulum explained that the Chinese system involves identifying potential leaders with integrity based on their past records and performance in public office.
These individuals are then evaluated and the best are selected to stand for election.
“In China, they use a selection versus election process. They identify credible leaders with a proven track record, evaluate their potential, and select the best to go forward for election,” Zulum said.
He also emphasised the importance of both leadership and followership in Nigeria, stating that good governance requires responsible citizens as well as capable leaders.
“Our problem here in Nigeria is not only about leadership but also followership. We need to focus on both components,” he added, urging Nigerians to become engaged citizens who can discern right from wrong in governance.
Zulum’s comments add to ongoing discussions in Nigeria about reforming leadership selection to foster accountability and integrity in public office.
