David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences (DUFUHS) in Uburu, Ebonyi State, has announced the commencement of free renal dialysis for patients in the State and its environs.

The University, which was approved by the National Universities Commission (NUC) on July 7, 2021, became the 197th University in Nigeria that conduct research on cancer and kidney diseases.

Jesse Uneke, a Professor and the Vice Chancellor of the University, shared the information with Journalists at the University in Uburu on Tuesday, emphasising that the research was aimed at finding a lasting solution to these life-threatening diseases.

He said, “We have started renal dialysis, and research is ongoing to address kidney diseases and how we can prevent them.

“We also have a cancer center where research is being conducted on prostate cancer, breast cancer, and cervical cancer. Additionally, we have a department of optometry and a department of ophthalmology on the upper floor, while the clinic is located on the ground floor.

“We have a facility for producing glasses; you simply bring the raw materials, and our laboratory staff will cut and shape the glasses according to each person’s specifications. This hands-on experience allows students to apply what they learn in lectures.”

Uneke highlighted that the world-class University, which the Federal Government took over on September 7, 2022, had experienced significant population growth, increasing its infrastructure and student numerical strength from 200 to 2,400 currently.
