The lifeless body of a 76-year-old man, Sikiru Olatunji, has been found in a forest near Imasayi, Ogun State, days after he was declared missing.
The discovery was confirmed by the Ogun State Police Command.
According to a police statement by Ogun Command spokesperson, Omolola Odutola Olatunji was last seen on February 8, 2025, before his corpse was located about one and a half kilometres from Wasinmi Abule Maria via Balogun Village in Yewa North Local Government Area.
The deceased was reportedly found lying face-up with his cutlass beside him.
However, there were no visible signs of violence on his body, and the cause of death remains undetermined.
The search for Olatunji involved officers from the Imasayi Police Division, Amotekun operatives, members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, the local Baale, and community hunters.
“After an extensive bush-clearing operation, the search team located the body in the forest,” the police statement read.
“The circumstances surrounding his death are still under investigation.”
Following the recovery, Olatunji’s family requested custody of his remains for burial, a request that was granted by the authorities.
The police have called on members of the public with any useful information to assist in the ongoing investigation.
Odutola assured that all leads would be thoroughly examined.
“We encourage anyone with relevant details to come forward,” she stated.
The discovery of the septuagenarian’s body has left the community in shock, with residents expressing concerns over the circumstances of his disappearance and death.
The Ogun State Police Command has pledged to intensify its efforts to determine the cause of death and ensure public safety in the area.
