Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has directed newly sworn-in local government chairmen and their deputies to stay away from local government council secretariats in a bid to prevent a breakdown of law and order in the state.
The governor issued this directive on Sunday while administering the oath of office and allegiance to the 30 newly elected local government chairmen and their deputies at the Osun State Government House.
In his address, Adeleke urged the officials to align their work with the manifesto of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, stressing his administration’s commitment to transforming the state.
“I call on you to be agents of change, community developers, and providers of the dividends of democracy,” the governor stated.
The governor also expressed gratitude to the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, OSSIEC, and security agencies for ensuring a smooth electoral process.
“We will not fail you. People’s welfare will continue to be our watchword,” he affirmed.
Adeleke extended his appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for maintaining peace in Osun State.
“I assure Mr President of my commitment to the rule of law,” he added.
Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, also addressed the gathering, congratulating the newly sworn-in officials and reminding them of their campaign promises.
“This is an opportunity for you to deliver to the grassroots. The reward for hard work is more opportunities,” Makinde said.
Makinde condemned the violence that erupted in the state on Monday, 17 February 2025, warning against a repeat of such incidents.
“We don’t want ‘wild wild West’ again. They should stay away from this zone. We want to peacefully provide the dividend of democracy to the people,” he cautioned.
He further advised the officials to refrain from resorting to self-help even in the face of court rulings.
“They should not think because they have federal might, this is a federal arrangement. I will stop here,” Makinde concluded.
Earlier, the OSSIEC Chairman, Barrister Hashim Abioye, presented Certificates of Return to the newly elected chairmen.
He congratulated them on their victory and urged them to be exemplary ambassadors of democracy.
The OSSIEC had announced on Saturday that PDP candidates had won all 332 councillorship and 30 local government chairmanship seats in the state.
