….Urges Internal Peaceful Solutions In Religious Matters in Nigeria
The National President of Al-Mushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA), Amb. Aminu Majidadi, has strongly criticized the recent appeal by the International Coalition Against Christian Genocide in Nigeria (ICAC-GEN) to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to intervene in Nigeria’s religious affairs.
In a statement on Wednesday, Majidadi questioned the rationale behind seeking external intervention rather than exhausting all available peaceful and legal avenues within Nigeria. While acknowledging concerns over religious violence, he stressed that bypassing national institutions and mechanisms in favor of foreign intervention undermines Nigeria’s sovereignty and weakens its democratic institutions.
According to him, the letter which was written last year has currently sparked reactions for different religious leaders.
“It is troubling that instead of pursuing dialogue, policy engagement, and constructive discourse, some individuals choose to call for external interference. Nigeria is not a battleground for religious supremacy but a nation that must work towards unity and peaceful coexistence,” Majidadi stated.
He also challenged ICAC-GEN’s claims regarding Nigeria’s religious demography, arguing that the absence of a credible national census should not be exploited to deepen divisions. While past census exercises have faced credibility challenges, he maintained that the focus should be on fostering national unity rather than fueling religious discord.
“Every nation grapples with demographic and political challenges, but responsible leadership demands that we address these issues internally rather than resorting to alarmist calls for foreign intervention,” he added.
Majidadi emphasized that religious persecution and insecurity in Nigeria require a collective approach involving religious leaders, security agencies, and policymakers. He urged ICAC-GEN and similar advocacy groups to channel their efforts into constructive engagement with the Nigerian government, security forces, and religious bodies to find sustainable solutions to their concerns.
“Appealing to foreign powers to intervene in internal religious matters is not the solution. If there are grievances, they should be addressed through lawful and peaceful means rather than inviting external influence into Nigeria’s affairs,” Majidadi concluded.
Reaffirming AITA’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and peaceful coexistence, he called on all stakeholders to work together in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions to ensure lasting peace and justice for all citizens.
