A Lagos State University, LASU, graduate, identified only as Adija, was found dead in her boyfriend’s apartment in the Meiran area of Lagos State, prompting a police investigation and a manhunt for the boyfriend, who has since absconded.
The incident occurred on 26 February 2025, after Adija visited her boyfriend’s home following his request. Concerns grew when she failed to answer her phone, leading her family to check on her whereabouts.
According to an Instagram user, @Eyeopener, who posted details of the tragedy, Adija’s family knew she had gone to visit her boyfriend and decided to visit the apartment after repeated calls went unanswered.
“Upon arrival, they found the door locked. When they finally managed to force it open, they were met with a tragic sight – her lifeless body on the bed, covered with a duvet,” @Eyeopener wrote.
The user also claimed that the couple had been in a troubled relationship since Adija’s first year at the university, often engaging in heated arguments and fights that were well-known to neighbours.
“Neighbours reported hearing her voice on Wednesday night but did not intervene, as fights between the couple were frequent. It wasn’t until the tragic discovery that they realised the worst had happened,” the post added.
Residents of the area confirmed that they heard noise from the apartment on the night of the incident but did not check, as it had become a regular occurrence.
A close family member of the victim, Tosin, described the pain felt by Adija’s mother, a single parent who had raised her children alone.
“The woman suffered so much raising them. She’s a single mum, and the lady in question was an easy-going person,” Tosin said.
Tosin also claimed that the boyfriend had reportedly called Adija’s mother after the incident, saying, “he’s also ready to die.”
When contacted, the victim’s family declined to speak on the matter, stating they would address the press at an appropriate time.
Adija’s sister also refused to comment, choosing to remain anonymous but confirming the family’s intention to issue a statement later.
The Lagos State Police Command confirmed that efforts were underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect.
“Efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect,” said police spokesperson Benjamin Hundeyin in a brief statement on Sunday.
The circumstances surrounding Adija’s death remain unclear, with an autopsy and further investigations expected to reveal the cause.
As the investigation continues, the police have urged anyone with information on the suspect’s whereabouts to come forward.
The tragic incident has sparked discussions about domestic violence and the importance of early intervention in toxic relationships.
