Renewed cult violence in Ogun State left at least four people dead following clashes between the outlawed Eiye and Aye confraternities in the Alogi, Somorin, and Obantoko areas on Saturday.
Eyewitnesses reported that the violence erupted when members of the Eiye group allegedly attacked and killed a member of the Aye group. In retaliation, the Aye confraternity launched a counterattack, resulting in further casualties.
A resident, who requested anonymity, said that the attacks happened simultaneously in different locations, with gunshots heard across the affected areas.
“I saw the police moving in quickly, but by then, four people had already been killed,” the witness stated.
Another source, however, claimed that only two people lost their lives in the clashes.
“The situation was tense, and many residents were afraid to leave their homes,” the source said.
A witness staying near the state police headquarters described the chaotic scene.
“I was buying some toiletries when I saw the police moving in a war-like manner,” he said. “Four cultists were shot dead in Somorin, Anobi, and Alogi.”
Residents expressed fear over the increasing frequency of cult-related violence in the area. “These clashes keep happening, and we live in constant fear,” a local trader remarked.
A previous cult clash in the same area in April 2024 resulted in the death of one Azeez Olaitan, reportedly a member of the Aye confraternity.
The violence was said to be a revenge attack by Eiye members.
The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the recent clashes. Spokesperson Omolola Odutola responded briefly, stating, “Yes, there was a clash,” but did not provide further details on the number of casualties.
The repeated cult wars have put local authorities under pressure to curb gang violence. Residents have urged the police to increase patrols and take stricter measures against cult-related activities.
A security expert in Abeokuta said, “These groups operate with impunity, and without stronger enforcement, the cycle of violence will continue.”
Community leaders have also called for urgent government intervention.
“We need more security presence and youth engagement programmes to prevent these clashes,” a local chief stated.
The Ogun State government has yet to issue an official response regarding the incident.
However, sources say security meetings are being held to address the rising violence.
The clashes have disrupted daily activities, with businesses closing early and residents avoiding certain areas due to safety concerns.
The police have urged the public to provide information that could help track down those responsible.
“Anyone with useful information should come forward,” an officer said.
Efforts to reach local hospitals for details on casualties were unsuccessful, but sources indicated that some injured individuals were receiving treatment.
The situation remains tense, with security forces on high alert to prevent further escalation.
