An Oyo State High Court in Ibadan has dismissed the case against Queen Naomi Silekunolami, broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat, and school principal Abdullahi Fasasi over a December 2024 stampede that led to the death of 35 children.
Justice B.K. Olawoyin of Court 8, Ring Road, struck out the case on Thursday, stating that ruling otherwise could discourage individuals from supporting humanitarian causes.
The defendants had faced a four-count charge, including conspiracy, negligence, and failure to provide adequate security during the Christmas Funfair at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun.
The tragic incident occurred on 18 December 2024, when a stampede broke out at the school’s premises, resulting in multiple casualties and injuries.
Speaking after the ruling, broadcaster Oriyomi Hamzat expressed relief and commended the court’s decision, pledging to continue his humanitarian efforts.
However, Hamzat stated that he would no longer collaborate with any organisation to host similar events in the future.
He clarified that previous events organised solely by him or his team had never resulted in such unfortunate incidents.
The court’s ruling has sparked mixed reactions, with some welcoming the decision while others call for stricter event safety regulations.
Authorities have reiterated the importance of proper security and crowd control measures at large gatherings to prevent future tragedies.
