The video, which circulated widely on social media, showed pupils learning in classrooms with unfinished block walls, inadequate facilities and poor infrastructure, sparking outrage and criticism from members of the public.
According to reports, the suspended teachers were accused of being behind the circulation of the footage. In response, the state government issued suspension letters directing the affected head teachers to hand over all government property in their possession to the next most senior officer in their respective schools.
In a letter dated May 18, 2026 and signed by the Education Secretary of Ezza-North Local Government Area, Francis Nwonunku, the government accused the teachers of gross misconduct and undermining the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru.
“You are hereby suspended indefinitely as the head teacher of the above school due to your gross misconduct for denying the school pupils their right to quality education and also sabotaging the effort of our education-loving governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru,” the letter stated.
The letter further directed the affected officials to immediately submit all school properties and provide copies of their handover notes to the office of the Education Secretary.
