The Abia State Government has announced plans to revamp the National War Museum and Ojukwu Bunker in Umuahia, aiming to transform them into world-class tourist destinations.
The Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed this on Monday during a press briefing at the Government House in Umuahia, following the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu stated that the initiative would be carried out in collaboration with the Federal Government to preserve the historical significance of these sites.
“In the same vein, Abia State Government, through the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, will, in collaboration with the Federal Government, revamp the National War Museum Umuahia and Ojukwu Bunker into world-class tourism destinations,” he said.
He further disclosed that over 55 heritage sites had been identified across the state and would be developed to boost tourism and promote Abia’s cultural legacy.
“These sites were discovered by the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, and they hold significant historical and cultural value,” Kanu added.
Among the identified sites are Ulochukwu Cave in Alayi, Bende Local Government Area, and the Mazi Okorie Orji’s Compound in Arochukwu.
Others include Ntugbo, Oloko in Ikwuano, where participants in the famous Aba Women’s Riots of 1929 were tried.
The Commissioner also highlighted the recent signing of the Abia Electricity Bill into law, stating that it would enhance industrialisation and economic growth in the state.
Speaking on cultural preservation, the Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy announced the launch of an Igbo radio programme, “Oge Omenala”.
“The programme will air every Wednesday, providing an opportunity for our people to discuss and celebrate their rich cultural heritage,” he said.
The Abia State Government has urged both local and international investors to take advantage of these developments to promote tourism in the state.
