The National President of the Al-Mushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA), Ambassador Aminu Majidadi, has called on the National Assembly to exercise caution and patriotism as they deliberate on the proposed tax reforms presented by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In a statement issued in Abuja, Amb. Majidadi emphasized the critical need for the reforms to align with the overarching objective of fostering sustainable economic growth while addressing the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians. He noted that taxation, being a cornerstone of national revenue, must be restructured with precision to benefit the entire populace rather than exacerbate existing economic inequalities.
“This is a defining moment for our country, a time to steer the ship of our economy towards a stable and prosperous future. However, we must not embark on this journey without clear direction and purposeful leadership,” Majidadi stated.
The AITA President urged lawmakers to prioritize inclusivity and transparency in evaluating the proposed reforms, stressing that the long-term interests of the nation should take precedence over short-term gains.
“Taxation policies can either propel a nation toward progress or deepen its economic woes. It is imperative for the National Assembly to carefully scrutinize the proposals, ensuring that they do not disproportionately burden vulnerable Nigerians but instead create opportunities for growth and prosperity,” he added.
Majidadi further highlighted the need for accountability in the utilization of tax revenues, urging the government to commit to providing tangible developmental outcomes that would restore public confidence in the system.
“Now is the time to rebuild trust between the government and the governed. Nigerians must see the benefits of these taxes in improved infrastructure, healthcare, education, and security. Without such assurances, the reforms risk being perceived as exploitative,” he warned.
He also reminded stakeholders of the critical role tax reform plays in shaping the nation’s economic trajectory, urging a united approach to drive meaningful change.
“This is not a time for partisan interests or political posturing. It is a time to prioritize Nigeria’s future. Let us ensure that our economic ship has a competent pilot and a clear destination,” Majidadi concluded.
The AITA President reiterated his organization’s readiness to collaborate with relevant authorities in monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the proposed reforms to ensure they serve the collective good of the Nigerian people.
