…. Calls for Justice, Equity
The Al-Mushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA) has commended the Federal Government’s intervention in addressing the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, emphasizing the need for justice, equity, and an end to political marginalization.
Ambassador Aminu Majidadi, the National President of AITA, lauded the efforts of the Minister of Women Affairs, Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, and the Senate leadership for initiating dialogue to resolve the matter. He noted that the move aligns with democratic principles and underscores the importance of inclusivity in governance.
“The reported willingness of the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, to broker peace is a commendable step towards restoring fairness in the legislative process. No institution should be seen as silencing dissenting voices, especially when due process remains a fundamental pillar of democracy,” Majidadi stated.
AITA reiterated that the circumstances surrounding Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s suspension have raised critical concerns about legislative fairness, particularly regarding the representation of women in governance. Majidadi stressed that ensuring justice in this case would reinforce public trust in democratic institutions.
“The exclusion of any lawmaker—especially on issues concerning fundamental rights and accountability—sets a dangerous precedent. It is imperative that the Senate leads by example, demonstrating that equity and justice remain the guiding principles of national leadership,” he added.
The organization further urged all stakeholders involved to eschew any form of political marginalization and to ensure that legislative procedures remain transparent and just.
“AITA stands firmly against any actions that undermine the principles of accountability and good governance. We call on all parties to work towards an amicable resolution that not only upholds the dignity of the Senate but also strengthens Nigeria’s democratic institutions,” Majidadi concluded.
AITA reaffirmed its commitment to promoting transparency and accountability across all sectors, urging the National Assembly to uphold democratic values and foster an environment where justice prevails.
