In response to a recent suicide attempt by a 200-level student, Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has announced it is considering a waiver policy to support students facing academic challenges.

According to an internal memo dated November 1, 2024, made public recently, the university’s Senate Division convened a special Committee of Deans meeting to address the incident and explore ways to assist affected students.

Signed by the Deputy Registrar, M.S. Oluwajoba, the memo outlines a recommendation for supportive measures to ease the academic pressures on extra-year students.

The 200-level student, who had recently transferred from the Faculty of Pharmacy to the Department of Biology Education, reportedly attempted suicide on October 16.
This incident prompted the Dean of the Faculty to bring the issue to the attention of higher authorities, resulting in a review of existing support structures.

The memo encourages departmental and faculty boards to foster a supportive environment, urging staff and academic advisers to offer compassionate guidance.

The latest directive replaces an earlier decision that specified criteria for graduation waivers for students with one or two remaining courses, provided it does not alter their class of degree.

University Public Relations Officer Abiodun Olanrewaju confirmed the institution’s commitment to alleviating the mental health strain associated with prolonged academic years.

“We want to prevent further suicide attempts by addressing the pressures students face, especially those close to graduation who are struggling with one or two remaining courses,” Olanrewaju said.

He added that the compassionate waiver initiative reflects the university’s sensitivity to the current economic and academic climate.

A university official, however, clarified that while the waiver consideration is not yet official, it is a strategic response to the critical situation at hand.
