The Oyo State Government has dismissed rumours surrounding the health of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, confirming that the monarch is alive and in good health.

In response to widespread reports claiming the Olubadan’s death at the age of 89, the Oyo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Wasiu Olatunbosun, reassured the public of the king’s well-being.

“Olubadan is alive, hale, and hearty,” Olatunbosun stated. “I spoke with one of his sons, Prince Olaseke Owolabi Olakulehin, who confirmed this on behalf of the family.”

Gbenga Ayoade, the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, also affirmed the king’s good health, stating that there were no issues when he left the palace the previous evening.

“When I later contacted the palace, I was told Baba is hale and healthy,” Ayoade said.

Addressing speculation that the Olubadan had been flown out of Ibadan for medical treatment, Ayoade refuted the claims.

“Baba is still in Ibadan. He was not flown anywhere. He is doing very fine,” he added.

Oba Olakulehin, born on 5 July 1935, was presented with his staff of office by Governor Seyi Makinde on 12 July 2024 following the passing of the 42nd Olubadan, Oba Moshood Olalekan Balogun.

The late Oba Balogun died on 14 March 2024 at the age of 81, paving the way for Oba Olakulehin’s ascension to the throne.

The Oyo State Government has urged the public to disregard false information and avoid spreading unverified reports.

“Let’s continue to pray for the long life and good health of our revered monarch,” Olatunbosun said.
