The National President of Al-Mushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA), Amb. Aminu Majidadi, has joined millions of Nigerians and the global community in commemorating this year’s International Workers’ Day, paying glowing tribute to the resilience, dedication, and immeasurable contributions of the Nigerian workforce to national growth and stability.
In a statement released on May 1 to mark the occasion, Amb. Majidadi described Workers’ Day as a solemn and symbolic reminder of the central role labour plays in the sustenance of every nation’s economy, governance, and social order. He stressed that the workforce remains the engine room of any society and must be treated with dignity, equity, and respect.
“The celebration of Workers’ Day is not merely ceremonial. It is a critical occasion to acknowledge the sacrifices, industry, and patriotism of workers who, despite daunting economic conditions, continue to drive the wheels of development in both public and private sectors,” the AITA President stated.
He emphasized the need for government at all levels, as well as private sector employers, to improve working conditions, ensure timely and fair remuneration, and guarantee the safety and welfare of workers in line with global best practices.
Amb. Majidadi further noted that the dignity of labour must be upheld through policies that promote decent work, social protection, job security, and freedom of association. He condemned the growing culture of casualisation, underemployment, and wage stagnation, which he said erode the morale and productivity of Nigerian workers.
“Today should not only be about parades and celebrations, but about concrete commitment to policies that uplift the Nigerian worker. From the teacher in the classroom to the farmer in the field, from the doctor in the hospital to the security personnel in remote outposts, every worker deserves fair reward and institutional support,” he added.
Reaffirming AITA’s commitment to advocating transparency, fairness, and accountability in labour-related governance, Amb. Majidadi called on the Federal Government to urgently revisit labour reforms, prioritise cost-of-living adjustments, and implement strategies that mitigate the harsh socio-economic realities confronting the workforce.
“As we mark Workers’ Day, let us remember that the prosperity of a nation is inseparable from the strength and well-being of its workforce. Investment in the Nigerian worker is investment in Nigeria’s future,” he concluded.
