Notorious bandit kingpin Kachalla Dan Lukuti, responsible for multiple deadly attacks in Zamfara and Katsina States, has reportedly died under strange circumstances.
Witnesses claim he exhibited bizarre symptoms, including barking like a dog, before succumbing to the illness.
Lukuti, who led an armed gang operating from Kokonba Forest in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State, fell ill about a week ago.
His condition worsened rapidly, leaving his gang members fearful and reluctant to approach him.
“He became violent and aggressive, displaying uncontrollable spasms and barking noises,” said a local source familiar with his activities.
“Nobody dared to help him because they were scared of what was happening.”
His criminal operations spanned several locations, including Dan Jiloga, Rijiya, Zonai, and Magami, with attacks extending to Faskari Local Government Area in Katsina State.
Authorities had long sought to apprehend him due to his involvement in kidnappings, killings, and armed robberies.
Despite his reputation for terror, his final days were marked by agony.
According to sources, he continued to howl and bark until his death, further deepening the mystery surrounding his illness.
Terrified gang members reportedly forced villagers in Kizara to bury Lukuti’s body, fearing that touching him might expose them to the same fate.
The burial took place at the local primary school, a location that has now sparked widespread speculation.
Some believe he suffered from rabies, a disease that can cause symptoms resembling his condition, while others suspect supernatural retribution for his violent crimes.
“People say it was divine punishment for the many lives he destroyed,” a resident commented.
Lukuti’s death comes amid intensified military operations targeting bandit hideouts in the Northwest.
Security forces have recently neutralised several bandit leaders and dismantled dozens of camps across Zamfara and Sokoto states.
Authorities have yet to confirm the exact cause of his death, but investigations are ongoing.
The development has raised questions about the state of banditry in the region and the possible disintegration of Lukuti’s network.
With his demise, security analysts believe there may be a shift in power among bandit groups operating in Zamfara and Katsina.
However, law enforcement agencies continue efforts to eliminate remaining threats and restore peace in the affected communities.
