As Nigeria marks Democracy Day, the National President of the Al-Mushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA), Ambassador Aminu Majidadi, has called on leaders and citizens alike to rededicate themselves to the principles of justice, accountability, and democratic governance.
In a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja, Amb. Majidadi described the annual commemoration as a moment of reflection on Nigeria’s democratic journey, its triumphs, and the ongoing challenges threatening the consolidation of democratic ideals.
“Democracy Day is not merely a celebration of political transition, but a solemn reminder of the struggles, sacrifices, and aspirations of our people for a just, inclusive, and accountable governance structure,” the statement read.
Amb. Majidadi underscored the need for all arms of government to demonstrate unwavering commitment to the rule of law, transparency, and policies that place the welfare of Nigerians above all else.
He noted, “Our democracy must go beyond periodic elections. It must be rooted in respect for human rights, responsive governance, equitable distribution of resources, and the active participation of citizens in the democratic process.”
The AITA President decried the prevailing socio-economic hardship confronting millions of Nigerians, stressing that true democracy must translate to improved living conditions, security, and opportunities for all.
He urged the government to prioritize structural reforms that tackle corruption, improve service delivery, and strengthen democratic institutions, while also calling on citizens to remain vigilant and actively engage in holding leaders accountable.
“As we commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, let us all – leaders and citizens – recommit ourselves to building a nation where truth prevails, justice is upheld, and accountability remains the bedrock of governance,” he added.
Amb. Majidadi reaffirmed AITA’s steadfast commitment to promoting transparency, civic awareness, and democratic accountability through advocacy and partnerships across sectors.
“Together, we can deepen our democracy and restore the confidence of the people in the democratic process. The future of our nation depends on our collective resolve to make democracy work for all,” he concluded.
