Former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, Major-General Maharazu Tsiga (rtd), has been abducted alongside nine villagers in Tsiga, Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Sources revealed that the abduction took place around midnight on Wednesday, though details of the incident remain unclear.
Residents say armed men stormed the village, taking Tsiga and other individuals.
A local resident, speaking anonymously, confirmed the attack, stating, “They invaded the village late at night and took several people, including the retired general.”
Reports also suggest that two people were killed during the incident, though independent verification remains unavailable. The assailants’ identities and motives are yet to be confirmed.
The Katsina State Police Command has yet to release an official statement.
Attempts to reach the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, for comments were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
Katsina State has been one of the hardest-hit regions by banditry and kidnapping in Nigeria’s North West.
Several attacks have been recorded in recent months, with residents living in constant fear.
The latest abduction comes amid assurances from Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is pressuring security agencies to end insecurity in the country.
In an interview with BBC Hausa, Abubakar stated, “The President frequently asks us when this problem will be solved. The Service Chiefs have given assurances that security will improve by the end of the year.”
Authorities are yet to disclose any rescue operations or negotiations regarding the kidnapped victims.
Meanwhile, residents continue to demand urgent intervention to curb rising insecurity in the region.
As of now, there has been no claim of responsibility for the abduction, and the whereabouts of the kidnapped individuals remain unknown.
