The Imo State Police Command has arrested a 64-year-old lawyer, Barrister Donald Mbamah, in connection with the alleged shooting of a 16-year-old student, Paul Victor.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Henry Okoye, the incident occurred on 17 March 2025 at approximately 12:34 PM at Mbamah’s residence in Area N, World Bank, New Owerri.
The victim, a student of Urban Development Secondary School, was reportedly shot in the buttocks under circumstances that are currently under investigation.
Police operatives from the New Owerri Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, responded to a distress call from a neighbour who heard the gunshot.
“They arrived at the scene, apprehended the suspect, and rushed the victim, Paul Victor, to General Hospital, Umuguma, for treatment,” Okoye stated.
Despite medical efforts, the teenager succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on 20 March 2025.
Following the incident, Barrister Mbamah was transferred to the State Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for further questioning.
Okoye confirmed that a thorough investigation is ongoing, and efforts are being made to recover the firearm allegedly used in the shooting.
“The Imo State Police Command extends its condolences to the family and friends of the deceased and assures the public that justice will be served,” he added.
Authorities have also urged the public to remain calm and allow the legal process to take its course.
Legal proceedings will commence once investigations are concluded and sufficient evidence is gathered against the suspect.
The police reiterated their commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the safety of residents in the state.
