The Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Police Command has confirmed multiple deaths following a devastating accident near Nyanya Bridge in Abuja on Wednesday evening.
A statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, revealed that 14 vehicles were burnt in the incident.
The police reported that six victims were rescued from the wreckage and rushed to the hospital, where they were later confirmed dead.
Eyewitnesses at the scene, however, claimed that the death toll exceeded ten, as several others sustained severe injuries.
According to the police, the accident occurred when a Dangote trailer loaded with cement lost control while approaching Nyanya Bridge from AYA.
“The trailer crashed into stationary vehicles caught in traffic, causing an immediate explosion that engulfed 14 vehicles in flames,” Adeh stated.
She added that panic spread across the area as motorists and pedestrians scrambled to escape the raging fire.
Emergency responders, including the fire service and security agencies, rushed to the scene to rescue trapped victims.
“Despite the intense heat and thick smoke, responders managed to pull six victims from the wreckage, but they were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital,” the police spokesperson said.
The remains of the deceased have been deposited at the Karu General Hospital Morgue.
Authorities confirmed that other victims with severe burns and injuries are currently receiving treatment at the National Hospital and Asokoro Hospital.
Meanwhile, police officers, in collaboration with the fire service, worked to contain the inferno and restore normal traffic flow in the area.
Adeh assured the public that investigations were underway to determine the cause of the crash and prevent future occurrences.
She urged motorists to exercise caution while driving and to report any safety concerns to the authorities.
“The police remain committed to ensuring the safety of all road users, and we will continue to enforce strict traffic regulations,” she added.
