The National Agency for the Control of AIDS, NACA, has advised Nigerians to prioritise safety and responsibility while celebrating Valentine’s Day.
The agency emphasised the importance of making informed decisions to protect against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, STIs.
In a statement signed by Mrs Toyin Aderibigbe, NACA’s Director General, Dr Temitope Ilori, urged the public to celebrate with caution. She highlighted that HIV remains a significant public health concern but is preventable through responsible behaviour and awareness.
“HIV is preventable, and we have the means to halt its spread,” Ilori stated. “We want everyone to enjoy Valentine’s Day while making choices that safeguard their health. Love responsibly, get tested, and make informed decisions.”
The agency warned against risky behaviours such as unprotected sex, having multiple partners, and substance abuse, which could increase the risk of HIV transmission.
It encouraged Nigerians to take proactive steps in safeguarding their health.
Dr Ilori also stressed the importance of regular HIV testing as part of personal healthcare routines.
She noted that knowing one’s HIV status helps prevent the spread of the virus and ensures early access to treatment for those who test positive.
“Regular HIV testing is essential for everyone,” she said. “Free testing is available at all government hospitals, and we encourage people to take advantage of these services.”
NACA reiterated its commitment to reducing HIV transmission in Nigeria through awareness campaigns, free testing, and access to preventive measures.
The agency urged individuals to take responsibility for their health and that of their partners.
The statement also encouraged the use of protection, such as condoms, to prevent the spread of HIV and other STIs.
It called on healthcare professionals and organisations to support awareness efforts during the Valentine’s season.
NACA further appealed to parents and guardians to educate young people about safe practices and the risks associated with unprotected intimacy.
It urged open conversations on sexual health to ensure a well-informed society.
As Valentine’s Day approaches, the agency reminded Nigerians that love and responsibility should go hand in hand.
It reaffirmed its dedication to promoting public health and reducing the impact of HIV/AIDS in the country.
