CIVIL SOCIETY GROUPS Renew Call for Investigation into Alleged Promotion Racketeering in the Nigeria Police Force
Abuja, Nigeria — 12th August 2026
Two civil society organisations, Capital Watch Media and the Al-Mushahid Initiative for Transparency and Accountability (AITA), have renewed their calls for a comprehensive and impartial investigation into allegations surrounding the promotion of C.S.P. Chima Eze Ogarashi, A.P. No. 118847, within the Nigeria Police Force.
The organisations made their position known in separate reminder letters addressed to the Inspector-General of Police, following an earlier petition concerning what they described as alleged irregularities surrounding a purported special promotion and related career progression.
In its 10 August 2026 reminder letter, Capital Watch Media urged the police authorities to undertake a thorough review of the matter, stressing that allegations of irregular promotion, if established, could undermine the principles of merit, fairness, institutional integrity, transparency and public confidence in the police service.
Similarly, in a 30 July 2026 second reminder, AITA referred to its earlier petition dated 5 March 2025, reiterating allegations concerning the circumstances surrounding the officer’s reported special promotion and subsequent progression. The organisation stated that information supplied by petitioners raised questions regarding claims of special training or courses allegedly connected to the promotion.
The letters also raised concerns regarding the officer’s reported period in an acting capacity and called for clarification from the appropriate authorities on whether established administrative and statutory procedures were duly followed.
Both organisations emphasised that their requests are intended to promote transparency, accountability, due process and institutional credibility, rather than to prejudge the officer or determine guilt.
They therefore urged the Inspector-General of Police and other relevant authorities to subject the allegations and accompanying documents to an independent, transparent and evidence-based review, with appropriate action taken if any violation of established rules is substantiated.
The organisations further indicated that copies of the correspondence have been directed to relevant oversight authorities, including the Minister responsible for Police Affairs, the National Assembly Committees on Police Affairs, and other appropriate public accountability institutions.
Capital Watch Media and AITA maintained that a credible investigation would not only address the specific allegations but would also reinforce public confidence in the integrity of Nigeria’s policing and promotion processes.
The organisations call on all parties to allow the appropriate authorities to conduct their investigations objectively, while respecting due process and the rights of every person named in the petitions.
