The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued a notice of alleged gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The notice, served on Monday, cited compliance with Section 188 of the Nigerian Constitution as the legal basis for the action.
A statement from the lawmakers read, “In compliance with Section 188 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), and other extant laws, we, the undersigned members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, hereby forward to you a Notice of Gross Misconduct by the Deputy Governor of Rivers State in the performance of the functions of her office.”
Although the Assembly had previously denied any plans to impeach Fubara, reports of a possible removal have continued to circulate.
The latest development adds to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State.
Meanwhile, Governor Fubara has yet to officially respond to the impeachment notice.
His political allies have, however, accused certain lawmakers of acting under external influence to destabilise his administration.
This action comes amid heightened political tensions between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Observers believe Wike’s influence in the state may be a key factor in the ongoing crisis.
As the situation unfolds, it remains unclear whether the impeachment process will proceed or if a political resolution will be reached.
