Timileyin Ajayi, accused of murdering Salome Adaidu, a National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, member, has pleaded not guilty to the charge of culpable homicide brought against him.
Ajayi was arraigned on Monday at the High Court of Justice in Lafia, Nasarawa State, before Justice Simon Aboki. During the proceedings, the suspect denied the allegations in the court.
The charge against Ajayi is punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.
The prosecution alleges that he killed Adaidu in a fit of rage.
Reports revealed that the suspect was apprehended with the severed head of Adaidu, leading to his arrest and subsequent investigation.
Ajayi allegedly confessed during police interrogation that he murdered Adaidu after accusing her of infidelity.
“She was cheating on me, and I couldn’t take it,” Ajayi reportedly told investigators.
The court proceedings saw the prosecution team requesting a speedy trial, citing the severity of the offence and the evidence against the accused.
In response, Ajayi’s defence counsel argued that the confession obtained during interrogation was inadmissible, claiming it was coerced.
“We will challenge the validity of the confession in due course,” the defence stated.
Justice Aboki adjourned the case until 5 February 2025 for further hearing, including the presentation of evidence by the prosecution.
Outside the courtroom, members of Adaidu’s family expressed their grief and called for justice.
“We want the court to ensure that Salome’s death is not in vain,” a family member said.
The case has drawn significant public attention, sparking discussions about violence and safety among young Nigerians, particularly NYSC members serving in different parts of the country.
