The Ogun State Police Command on Tuesday arraigned the suspended Olorile of Orile Ifo, Semiu Adewale Ogunjobi, for allegedly assaulting a 73-year-old chief, Abraham Areola.
The case, which was heard at a Magistrate Court, involved charges of conspiracy, assault, and conduct likely to cause a breach of the peace.
Police spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the development in a statement, saying, “The Kabiyesi Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, who assaulted one elderly man in a viral video, in Ifo, Ogun State, has been charged to court today, February 4, 2025.”
Ogunjobi’s arrest and arraignment followed public outcry after a video showing the alleged assault surfaced online.
The footage reportedly depicted the traditional ruler engaging in an altercation with the elderly chief, leading to calls for justice from community members.
The police charged Ogunjobi with three counts, including conspiracy to commit assault, direct involvement in the attack, and engaging in conduct that could disturb public peace.
The case was brought before a Magistrate who granted him bail while setting a future court date.
Confirming the court’s decision, Adejobi stated, “He was granted bail while the case was adjourned to 06/03/2025.”
However, he did not disclose the conditions of the bail granted to the embattled monarch.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring justice in the matter.
“The police will continue to uphold the rule of law and the core values of the noble profession,” Adejobi added, stressing that due process would be followed.
Residents of Orile Ifo expressed mixed reactions to the development, with some calling for a thorough investigation while others urged restraint until the court delivers its verdict.
“We just want fairness in this case,” a community elder said.
Meanwhile, legal experts noted that the charges against Ogunjobi could carry significant penalties if he is found guilty.
“Assault, especially against an elderly person, is taken seriously under Nigerian law,” said Barrister Tunde Oladipo, a legal practitioner.
The Ogun State government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter.
However, sources within the traditional council suggested that further disciplinary actions could follow depending on the court’s ruling.
The case is expected to continue on March 6, 2025, when Ogunjobi is set to return to court to answer the charges against him.
