A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck central Iran on Friday, causing significant destruction in the Natanz area of Isfahan province, according to the United States Geological Survey, USGS.

The USGS reported that the quake’s epicentre was located 30 kilometres northwest of Ardestan at a depth of 10 kilometres.

The tremor was strongly felt in Natanz, a city known for housing one of Iran’s key nuclear facilities.

The earthquake occurred at approximately 10:23 local time, shaking buildings and prompting concerns about possible casualties.

Authorities have not yet confirmed the number of injuries or fatalities, but reports indicate that many structures sustained serious damage.

Emergency response teams have been deployed to the affected areas to assess the situation and provide assistance to those in need.

“We are closely monitoring the impact and will provide updates as more information becomes available,” an Iranian disaster management official stated.

Residents in the region have reported feeling strong tremors, with some describing the shaking as the most intense they have experienced in recent years.

Seismologists continue to evaluate the risk of aftershocks, cautioning that further tremors could follow in the coming hours or days.

The Iranian government has urged the public to remain calm while rescue operations and damage assessments are underway.
