The ongoing leadership crisis in the Lagos State House of Assembly may soon reach a resolution following the intervention of prominent figures within the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The dispute began on 13 January 2025 when 36 lawmakers voted to impeach former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, replacing him with Mojisola Meranda, the then-deputy speaker.
Obasa’s removal was attributed to allegations of poor leadership, consistent lateness to legislative sessions, high-handedness, and misuse of office and privileges.
Despite his impeachment, Obasa insisted he remains the rightful speaker, stating, “I strongly believe I am still the speaker until the right thing has been done.”
In response to the impasse, a high-level APC delegation, including former governors Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba, and Akinwunmi Ambode, was tasked with resolving the conflict.
The delegation’s efforts were directed by President Bola Tinubu following the Governance Advisory Council’s, GAC, failure to settle the matter.
On Sunday, 24 February 2025, the delegation met with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and other GAC members at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina.
A GAC member, Chief Muraina Taiwo, disclosed that one of seven lawmakers from Lagos West is being considered as a potential compromise candidate.
“The issue will die down soon. Between now and the middle of next week, everything will become clearer,” Taiwo said.
He added that the APC leaders would return to Abuja to brief President Tinubu on their recommendations.
Reports indicate both Obasa and Meranda may step down to allow for a neutral candidate from Lagos West to assume the speakership.
“The lawmakers seem to have agreed; otherwise, there won’t be peace,” a source within the APC stated.
One leading contender is David Setonji, representing Badagry Constituency II, noted for his experience and seniority in the House.
Setonji, who has served in the House since 2015, currently holds the position of Chief Whip and has also served as Deputy Chief Whip.
Obasa had earlier challenged his impeachment in the Lagos State High Court, claiming the process was flawed as the Assembly was in recess.
However, as part of the resolution, Obasa is expected to withdraw his legal action against the Assembly and Meranda.
A top APC source suggested that the lawmakers opposed to Obasa feel their objective has been achieved.
“Those who don’t want Obasa feel they have won the battle, and the man will never be their speaker again,” the source said.
Meranda, described as a “child of circumstance,” is reportedly willing to step aside in the interest of peace.
The agreement is expected to be finalised within the week, with both Obasa and Meranda likely to vacate their positions.
Chief Tajudeen Olusi, Chairman of the GAC, confirmed the party’s mediation efforts, saying, “The party is mediating. At the appropriate time, we shall tell you the conclusion of the mediating panel.”
He emphasised the importance of listening to all sides, adding, “It’s part of the responsibilities of the party when there are conflicts within the legislature.”
As negotiations continue, the Lagos Assembly looks toward a resolution that could stabilise its leadership and restore legislative harmony.
