The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old man, Gbolahan Adebayo, for allegedly beating his girlfriend to death in the Ijedodo area of Alimosho Local Government, Lagos State.
The tragic incident reportedly took place on Friday during the 25-year-old victim’s visit to Adebayo’s residence.
According to witnesses, the couple’s argument escalated into violence late at night.
A neighbour, identified only as Akin, described hearing the victim’s screams around 2 am.
“We started hearing a woman crying and begging for help. The noise went on for about an hour and then stopped suddenly.”
It was not until the next morning that Adebayo reportedly raised an alarm after discovering his girlfriend unresponsive.
“He started shouting for help around 7 am. When we entered the room, she was lying motionless on the bed.”
The incident was reported to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division by a neighbour on Sunday.
Police sources confirmed that attempts were made to revive the victim before she succumbed to her injuries.
The Lagos State Police spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed the arrest and stated that the victim’s body showed visible signs of violence.
“The deceased was taken to a hospital in Ijegun, where she was pronounced dead by the attending doctor,” Hundeyin said.
Following the report, detectives visited the scene and gathered evidence.
“The hospital was also visited, and the body was inspected and photographed before being moved to the IDH morgue in Yaba for an autopsy,” Hundeyin continued.
Adebayo was taken into custody shortly after the police investigation began.
“The suspect is being held as we continue our investigation into the circumstances leading to this tragic event,” the police spokesperson stated.
Neighbours described the victim as a frequent visitor to Adebayo’s home.
“We never imagined something like this would happen,” said another resident who asked to remain anonymous.
As the investigation continues, the police have assured the public that justice will be served.
“We are committed to uncovering the truth and ensuring the appropriate legal action is taken,” Hundeyin concluded.
